Jeep 4×4 Systems Explained

Not all 4×4 systems are the same. Jeep offers multiple setups – each tuned for different levels of off-road performance and all-weather control:

  • Command-Trac® 4×4: A part-time system with a 2.72:1 low range – ideal for snow, sand, mud, and off-road conditions. Found in Wrangler Sport and similar trims.
  • Rock-Trac® 4×4: Designed for serious off-roaders – with a 4:1 low gear ratio, Tru-Lok® electronic locking differentials, and unmatched crawling control. Standard on Wrangler Rubicon models.
  • Quadra-Trac & Quadra-Drive: Full-time 4WD systems with available rear electronic limited-slip differential (ELSD) – giving Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models refined grip across changing road surfaces.

Whether you’re headed to the beach in Hermosa or the mountains above Torrance – there’s a Jeep 4×4 system built for your kind of adventure.

Selec-Terrain® & Selec-Speed® Explained

Some Jeeps go beyond 4×4 with smart terrain control features that let you tailor performance to your surroundings:

  • Selec-Terrain®: Choose from Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud, or Rock modes – and let your Jeep automatically adjust throttle, traction, and torque distribution for optimal grip.
  • Selec-Speed® Control: Maintains a consistent low speed when descending or climbing steep grades – acting like cruise control for the trail.

If you’re exploring backroads in Palos Verdes or maneuvering around rocky terrain near Big Bear – these systems help you stay in control.

MASTER THE MUCK

Jeep® Brand 4x4 vehicles have sealed electrical systems, a high air intake and available skid plates for additional undercarriage protection against muddy conditions.

EVERYDAY TRACTION

Common commutes can be tricky when snow, black ice or heavy rain create challenging driving conditions. Thankfully, Jeep® Brand 4x4 systems and robust suspensions are engineered to help you handle these hazards with confidence.

UNPAVED IS OFF-ROAD

You can expect washboard roads and ruts that will test your vehicle’s suspension system when driving off-road. Gravel can act like ice in certain circumstances. That’s where Jeep® Brand 4x4 systems with electronic brake differentials, traction control, Electronic Stability Control and gas shocks can help you stay in control.

TAKE ON SLICK CONDITIONS

In snow, ice or sleet, you want a Jeep® Brand 4x4 vehicle to help navigate slick conditions. A Jeep Brand 4x4 system combined with a brake lock differential, antilock brakes and traction control will help see you through.

What the Trail Rated® Badge Means

When you see the Trail Rated® badge on a Jeep – it means the vehicle has passed five rigorous off-road performance tests:

  • Traction: Proven grip in mud, snow, rock, and sand.
  • Water Fording: Special sealing and higher air intakes for crossing shallow streams or flooded roads.
  • Maneuverability: Tight steering and precision handling on technical terrain.
  • Articulation: Keeps wheels on the ground for better contact and control.
  • Ground Clearance: Clears rocks, ruts, and obstacles with ease.

It’s more than a badge – it’s proof that your Jeep is built to perform when things get unpredictable.

GROUND CLEARANCE

Trail Rated® ground clearance gives you plenty of room between the underside of your vehicle and the terrain, allowing you to drive over rocks and logs while helping prevent underbody damage. The approach angle, breakover angle and departure angle are all maximized, helping you go over when going around isn’t possible.

ARTICULATION

The best adventures usually take place on the roughest terrain, but good articulation doesn’t just come in handy when off-roading. Areas with heavy construction or deep potholes require maximum suspension flexibility. Higher levels of articulation help your wheels remain stable and engaged when one or more tires are off the ground.

Jeep® Brand Trail Rated® 4x4 vehicles have the traction to handle some of the harshest, most unpredictable driving conditions. Whether you’re looking to take on some of the toughest terrain on earth or make it home through a fierce snowstorm, your Jeep Brand Trail Rated vehicle is engineered to handle it.
